Avebury.

1st September 2007. Yes. We were returning from the Bude (Cornwall) Jazz Festival, when an appalling traffic jam began, many miles south of Bristol. (They were widening the bridge over the River Avon, between Bristol & Avonmouth. I don’t know how long it took them to build the original bridge, but I swear to you it took them TEN YEARS to widen it – a national disgrace.) Anyway, we took a diversion up the A-361, which is just a sequence of random roads which lead from North Devon, vaguely going north-east (by a highly circuitous route), until it gets terribly ashamed of itself, and peters out somewhere near Rugby, Warks. We had never travelled it before (and never will again); but the bonus was that it runs through the centre of Avebury, a small village within an immense prehistoric stone circle. Naturally, we stopped & had a look around.
