~March 2014. This fine, er… Highland cow or bull, for it must be one, naturally took precedence upon our arrival at Much Wenlock Priory. We had tried to get there in 2012, but picked the day the Olympic Games torch was due to come through, and there was no parking for miles around. 

Anyway there we were, and for once will let the images speak for themselves…

A 12th century Cluniac Monastery, on the site of of an eighth century foundation.

Dissolved around1540 by Henry VIII. I often wondered what he did with all the money he got by confiscation of Church lands, valuables &c., and asked the question of someone who knew a lot about English History. ‘He spent it!’ was the immediate reply. ‘On wars?’ ‘No; just palaces & things…’ Well, that’s what you could do if you were a King in those days…

On the right is the old Prior’s house. It’s called Wenlock Abbey, and is still lived in.
